In Memory – Roger Jacobs

Roger Jacobs was born in Yonkers, NY, and met his future wife Nancy at Marietta College where they both attended.  After he retired from the Marines, Roger and Nancy moved to Scituate in 1972 at the urging of Nancy, who wanted to live in a small town, near the water, that was close enough to Boston where Roger had just gotten a job.  They had two children, Dan and Mike, who both attended Scituate High School.  Roger passed away on May 27, 2012 of a stroke, and is the inspiration for this event.

Roger loved Scituate.  He was instrumental in bringing the DARE program to the Scituate school system.  He was a member of the Rotary Club for over 25 years.  He participated in numerous local fundraisers.  He was a member of St. Luke’s church, where served as Treasurer, Layreader, Usher, and Acolyte Director.  He participated annually in the Pan-Mass Challenge from 1991 until 1996 when he could no longer race due to health reasons, where he far exceeded fundraising expectations each year for the Jimmy Fund.  He supported the town, the community, and his family in every way he could, and never thought of asking for any recognition or anything in return.

For those fortunate enough to know Roger, they knew a kind man with an infectious laugh driven by a unique sense of humor.  He was a role model for his children, and wanted nothing but the best for his family making any sacrifice for them.

Although Roger was not really a runner, he set regional swimming records while in New York, and biked for enjoyment, exercise, and charity as an adult.  However, Roger supported Mike as he chose to run Cross Country at Scituate High School.

Roger’s ashes are buried at the St. Luke’s Memorial Garden.  It was during a recent visit to the Memorial Garden that Mike was inspired to create this event.  Roger was altruistic, so he would not even consider having an event held in his honor.  Regardless, the proceeds donated to the SHS Cross Country team and American Heart Association will be in his memory.

This event is for Roger.
